Deep external rotator and adductor of the hip. Trigger points here are common in everyday and athletic populations and frequently contribute to the referred pain patterns described below.
Trigger point locations
Between the ischial tuberosity and the femur.
Referred pain pattern
Deep buttock pain similar to piriformis, often felt with sitting.
Palpation & testing
Palpate the muscle belly along its accessible course. Reproduction of the patient's familiar pain on palpation supports involvement.
Common causes
Sustained sitting on hard surfaces, ischial overload.
Self-care & clinical treatment
Hip mobility, sit breaks. Clinically: needling.
